2001 was an unforgettable year that unfortunately was shaped by the
September 11th tragedies and the aftermath. Despite the attacks
on America, the sports world recovered and grew stronger, closer
together. We saw the rise and fall of many teams and changes were
always happening in the year that was 2001. Below are the results
of our
staff's voting on the 12 sports-related categories.
1. Editor's Choice for Pro Athlete of the Year:
Given to athlete who had largest impact on their sport and exhibited
superiority in the league.
Winner: Barry Bonds (MLB, SF)
Runner-Up: Allen Iverson (NBA, PHI)
2. College Athlete of the Year:
College athletes are perhaps the most exciting athletes in sports.
Here are the best in the college ranks.
Winner: Shane Battier (Duke)
Runner-Up: Jason Williams (Duke)
3. MLB Athlete of the Year:
Given to the athlete who best exhibited greatness in Major
League Baseball in 2001.
Winner: Barry Bonds (SF)
Runner-Up: Curt Schilling (ARI)
4. NBA Athlete of the Year:
Given to the athlete who best exhibited greatness in the National
Basketball Association in 2001.
Winners: Allen Iverson (PHI), Shaquille O'Neal
(LAL)
Runner-Up: Vince Carter (TOR)
5. NFL Athlete of the Year:
Given to the athlete who best exhibited greatness in the National
Football League in 2001.
Winner: Marshall Faulk
Runner-Up: Brett Favre
6. NHL Athlete of the Year:
Given to the athlete who best exhibited greatness in the National
Hockey League in 2001.
Winner: Joe Sakic (COL)
Runners-Up: Patrick Roy (COL), Jaromir Jagr (PIT/WAS)
7. Coach of the Year:
Given to coach who lead his team the best through diversity and
hardship, or exhibited brilliance.
Winner: Mike Krzyzewski (CBB, Duke)
Runner-Up: Joe Torre (MLB, NYY, 2001 winner)
8. Highlight Reel Player of the Year:
With their amazing plays and performances, these players sometimes
draw more attention than the sport they play in, or the team they play
for. These players keep fans on their feet and bring a level of
excitement and energy like no one else.
Winner: Barry Bonds (SF)
Runner-Up: Vince Carter (TOR, 2001 winner)
9. Elite Sports Team of the Year:
Teams refer to the version in the year they won their championship
in.
Winner: L.A. Lakers
Runner-Up: Colorado Avalanche
10. Best Sports City:
These cities give new meaning to "home field advantage" and they
demonstrate great fan support, pride, and loyalty.
Winner: New York City
Runners-Up: Toronto, Cleveland, Chicago (tie)
11. Most-Hated Sports Figure:
The sports world isn't perfect and like in all places, there is
bound to be someone many dislike. The honors are given out here.
Winner: Bud Selig (MLB commissioner)
Runner-Up: "Those Behind the BCS"
12. Sports Central Columnist of the Year:
Given to SC columnist who most exhibited quality, knowledge, and
consistency throughout 2001.
Winner:
George Soules (2001 runner-up)
Runner-Up:
Vishal Patel
