SC Awards - 2001 Edition
To kick off the new millennium, Sports Central will begin a new tradition:
our annual sports awards. From the surprises, to the rivalries, to the
upsets, to the comebacks, 2000 was a memorable year in the sports world.
With that said, we at Sports Central felt it was our turn to vote and give
you our choices in eleven unique categories in the sports world - and on
Sports Central. Below, are the results of our
staff's voting:
1. Sports Central Columnist of the Year:
Given to SC columnist who most exhibited quality, knowledge, and
consistency throughout 2000.
Winner: Lee Manchur
Runner-Up: George Soules
2. Pro Athlete of the Year:
Given to athlete who had largest impact on their sport and exhibited
superiority in the league.
Winner: Tiger Woods
Runner-Up: Marshall Faulk
3. Pitcher of the Decade Award:
Given to most dominating pitcher from 1990-2000.
Winner: Greg Maddux
Runner-Up: Pedro Martinez
4. Surprise Story of the Year:
Sometimes you see something on the news that makes you go "WOW".
This award is given to the biggest "WOW" of the year.
Winner: Mario Lemieux's return to hockey
Runner-Up: Wisconsin's surprise trip to the 2000 Final Four
5. College Athlete of the Year:
College athletes are perhaps the most exciting athletes in sports.
Here are the best in the college ranks.
Winner: Drew Brees
Runner-Up: Mateen Cleaves
6. Coach of the Year:
Given to coach who lead his team the best through diversity and
hardship, or exhibited brilliance.
Winner: Joe Torre
Runner-Up: Jim Haslett
7. Greatest Sports Movie of All-Time:
If you don't like these movies, you aren't a sports fan.
Winner: Caddyshack
Runner-Up: Field of Dreams
8. Highlight Reel Player of the Year:
With their amazing plays and performances, these players sometimes
draw more attention than the sport they play in, or the team they play
for. These players keep fans on their feet and bring a level of
excitement and energy like no one else.
Winner: Vince Carter
Runner-Up: Randy Moss
9. Elite Sports Team of the Year:
Teams refer to the version in the year they won their championship
in.
Winner: New York Yankees
Runner-Up: St. Louis Rams
10. Sports Rivalry of the Year:
Given to the most intense, close, and exciting rivalry in 2000.
Winner: Duke/North Carolina (basketball)
Runner-Up: Florida/Florida State (football)
11. Best Sports Broadcaster of the Year:
Given to the top broadcaster through the course of the year.
Winner: Dick Vitale
Runner-Up: Bob Costas
